Lessons for March 2023

Feasting On The Word
Feasting on the Word provides opportunities for youth to explore
their personal and communal identity in Jesus Christ. Students will learn to approach God’s word in each lesson using the following:
- What is Important to know?
- Where is God in these words?
- So what does this mean in our lives?
- Now what is God’s word leading us to do?
Biblical stories will come alive in new and creative ways. In response to God’s amazing, unconditional love, youth will be challenged to put their faith into action as they grow to understand themselves as Christ’s disciples. Each session includes a media connection section that ties the week’s Scripture passage to a film, song, or Web site.

Lesson for March 19

WHAT IS SOMEBODY TRYING TO TELL US??
Today’s Bible story is about how God desires people to be.

During the season of Lent, Christians often consider how to improve themselves to serve God better.
Pray:
Holy God, thank you for your presence in our lives and the opportunity to
be guided by your word to us today.
1 Samuel 8:4-9
New International Version
4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead[a] us, such as all the other nations have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
1 Samuel 8:19-22
New International Version
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
1 Samuel 9:1-2
New International Version
Samuel Anoints Saul
9 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. 2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.
Amen.

Why did the people want a king?
Why does God say the people wanted a king?
What does 1 Samuel 9:1–2 tell us about Saul?
The people chose Saul as a warrior king on the basis of his physical appearance.
Unfortunately, Saul rejected the commands of God.
1 Samuel 16
New International Version
Samuel Anoints David
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
What does the Lord tell Samuel to look for?
What do you think “the Lord looks on the heart” (v. 7) means?
God chose David by seeing the attitude of his heart, even before his leadership qualities matured. In the same way, God sees our inner qualities and our potential.

How do you feel when you hear that God looks on your heart?
How is knowing this about God both positive and negative?
How does knowing that God sees potential in you affect how you think about yourself?

Have you read the story Charlotte’s Web or seen the
movie and know how it ends?
Just so you know or remember, in the story, Charlotte gives up her life by spinning the webs that will save Wilbur.

Think about this video clip we have just watched……
What do the others see in Charlotte at first?
What do we discover about the attitude of her heart?
What other children’s stories do you remember that tell a story in which a character is
judged by his or her outward appearance? How do those stories end?
REMEMBER THIS!!!
In our Bible Story today, David had a HEART for GOD!
Look at this sheet below, save it if you can, to see examples of what God saw in David’s Heart.

REMEMBER THIS AS YOU GO ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING WEEK:
“God does not look on outward appearances. God looks upon your heart.”
PRAY:
PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!
AMEN
